Exclusive Video: Guillermo del Toro on Making Mimic an 'A-Movie'
Years before Guillermo del Toro made a name for himself with dark box office hits like Blade II, Pan’s Labyrinth and Hellboy, Miramax gave the director a $30 million budget to film the insect horror film Mimic. At the time of its 1997 release, del Toro distanced himself from the studio-manipulated sci-fi flick — about a killer strain of bugs created by a well-meaning entomologist (Mira Sorvino) — but on September 27, Lionsgate releases a director’s cut Blu-ray of which del Toro finally approves. Ahead, find an exclusive clip from one of the Blu-ray’s new features in which the director discusses how he made Mimic an ‘A-Movie.’ The Mimic director’s cut, available tomorrow, will include seven minutes of restored footage as well as bonus materials created especially for its release including an audio commentary, a video prologue from the director and three featurettes. Exclusive: Julian Gilbey Goes Offworld
Directing sci-fi for Lloyd LevinNo-one ever seems quite sure whether the British film industry is experiencing a golden age or a bad case of the Mondays, but one thing's for sure: it's churning out some serious talent. The likes of Duncan Jones, Rupert Wyatt and Gareth Edwards have impressed the bigwigs of Tinseltown sufficiently to be handed the keys to the kingdom and the next wave of British filmmaking talent - Julian Gilbey, Ben Wheatley et al - seems poised to follow in their footsteps. Gilbey's chase thriller A Lonely Place To Die has been glimpsed by the right eyeballs: producer Lloyd Levin's to be exact. Levin has signed him up to direct Offworld, a sci-fi chock full of the kind of extra-terrestrials that'd give Dutch, Mac and the rest of the Predator crew pause for serious thought. It's a kind of an intergalactic Naked Prey, Levin told Empire, a pedal-to-the-metal safari movie set on an alien planet. There's lots of nasty creatures - some even on the good guys' side. Levin has worked with directors of the calibre of Guillermo Del Toro, Paul Greengrass and Paul Thomas Anderson, so Gilbey should be in safe hands for his Hollywood debut. So why Gilbey? A Lonely Place To Die is a movie after my own heart, Levin explained. I loved how physical and visceral it was. . While Gilbey has previously partnered up with his brother, Will, to script his Scottish-set thriller and crime movies Rise Of The Footsoldier and Rollin' With The Nines, American screenwriter David Leslie Johnson will be the man behind the typewriter on Offworld. When it comes to bringing nasties to life, Johnson has rhesus-splashed previous: he's wrote Orphan and is currently working on season two of The Walking Dead. Watch this space for more as get it. Carrie Bradshaw Headed To The CW
LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Carrie Bradshaw could be back on the small screen! According to multiple reports, The CW has bought The Carrie Diaries project a Sex and The City prequel based on Candace Bushnells book about Carries time in high school. The show is being developed by Gossip Girl producers Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage and according to Entertainment Weekly, the series could end up on the air by next fall. Deadline reported that Warner Bros. TV, which owns the rights to the The Carrie Diaries, is working out a deal that would allow the series to use characters and elements from the hit HBO series. Samantha Jones is featured in Bushnells book, but Miranda Hobbes and Charlotte York along with the rest of Carries circle of friends are not. As of now, HBO series creator Darren Star and star Sarah Jessica Parker are not attached to the project. A rep for The CW declined to comment when contacted by Access Hollywood. Last month, Michael Patrick King, co-executive producer of the Sex and The City television series and writer of both movies, voiced his feelings about a prequel. Im not working on any Sex and The City prequel at all, King said during a Television Critics Association panel to promote his new CBS show, 2 Broke Girls, in August. My Carrie Bradshaw started at 33, and I took her to 43. So I have no I didnt even want to know who Carrie Bradshaws parents were because I thought she just existed in Manhattan, he said. So for me, the idea of going backwards and making her less evolved, because the whole Sex and The City was about going from 33 to growth, so for me the idea of going backwards is something that I dont even imagine doing. By Terri MacLeodNEW YORK, N.Y. -- Get ready to dust off your credit cards open up your wallets - and shop until you drop. Fashions Night Out is Thursday and women everywhere will celebrate their favorite four letter word (shop) with after hour access to their favorite stores. Style-related events are happening in cities nationwide. In New York, there are a number of celebrity appearances, such as Natasha Bedingfield at Ann Taylor, Kate Walsh at Sephora, and Hayden Panettiere at Stuart Weitzman. Yet, before you slip on your most fashionable outfit and hit the town Healthy Hollywood has a little advice on surviving the shopping gridlock with your sanity and hairstyle intact. It has become one of the busiest nights in New York, so its pretty hard getting around town, states celebrity hairstylist Ric Pipino of New Yorks Pipino 57. So, to help NYs fashion elite and us regular gals get in a stress-free state of mind, Ric is throwing a Fashions Night Out prep party from 10 AM to 8 PM on September 8. His salon, Pipino 57, is offering a 20% discount on all their hair styling services, blowouts, manicures, spray tanning, mini facials and more. Its a not a bad idea to take a moment and de-compress before you head out the door and start to navigate Fashions Night Out. Your sanity will thank you! While a little me time helps you begin the night in the right state of mind, Ric also says a hairstyle with staying power is a must. After all, who wants to bother with their hair once theyve set out on their fashion adventure? Ric suggests adding texture into your hair by using a non-greasy hair product, like Lift Me by Revolution In Cut. Then it is always good to give your hair some curl with either a curling iron or heated rollers, reveals Ric, who also adds, This step makes it easier for your hair to last the entire day and evening. Start with clean hair pulled back into a sexy French twist and then as the evening moves on, you can take your hair down for a mid-evening party. Finally, pull your hair back into a tight bun for any late night events. Also, if you have room in your purse, take along a small can of hair spray, hairpins, and a hair tie to pull your hair back just in case any hair emergencies happen to arise you will be prepared!
